Grassroots Service Opportunities Blackhawk has numerous Local and Global Partners with whom we formally work to serve our local community and the world. But we realize that there are many other opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ in our community. We want to encourage those who call Blackhawk their home church to serve where they see a need, bring the love and words of Christ to others, whether or not it is a church-sponsored program. We are calling these non-church sponsored, self-initiated projects Grassroots Service. Listed below are Grassroots Service Opportunities that someone who attends Blackhawk is offering for you to participate in. Again, note that these are not Blackhawk sponsored ministries, but are great ways to get involved in serving the community. If God is tugging at your heart, make contact with the point person and get more information about how to be involved. Interested in starting or posting a Grassroots opportunity? Badger Prairie Nursing Home It’s about: Brightening the day of the developmentally disabled and the elderly in a low-income care facility. The basics: We visit Badger Prairie once a month on Saturday afternoons to spend time with the residents doing various activities: singing, drawing, telling jokes; basically just having a good time! There is also the possibility of working on the grounds to bring some beauty into their world. You are welcome to come just once to test-drive. Contact: Tim Mackie St Vincent de Paul Food Pantry It’s about: Serving 75-100 low income families a day to supplement their food supply The basics: Volunteers work 2-4 hour shifts as shelf stockers or “hosts” helping clients pick out the food they want from a grocery store style pantry. Serve once a month MTFS daytime Thursday 3-7. Contact: Mike Menard With Wings and a Halo It’s about: We donate children’s books to law enforcement and first responders (officers and volunteers) in a red backpack for the trunk of their squads and ambulances so that they can give these books to children in a crisis situation (e.g. at the scene of an accident, fire, domestic disturbance or any other stressful event). The basics: Volunteers are needed to help conduct "Book Drives," stamp and sticker the children’s books and to stuff them into backpacks for delivery to Police, Sheriff, State Patrol, EMS staff and volunteers throughout the state. Currently, we have a 10,000+ squad car waiting list. Please visit our website website for more information and contact us if you are interested in helping bring comfort to children in crisis situations. Contact: Paul Gilbertson Young Life Leader It’s about: Caring adults entering the world of kids – focusing on what matters to them – fun, adventure, friendship and a sense of significance. In doing so, we earn the privilege of talking to them about something that we think matters most of all – the truth about Jesus Christ.
The basics: We go where kids are and spend time with them one-on-one or in a group. We spend time weekly in prayer, fellowship and reflection. We plan and lead big group activities and small group bible studies for kids to have fun, strengthen friendships, and hear the Gospel of Jesus. This is a long term, on-going opportunity for adults to walk along side teens in Madison and surrounding communities. Contact: Sue Jackson
