Annual Juneteenth celebration
The mission of the Nehemiah Community Development Corporation is to affirm the dignity of marginalized, at-risk youth and adults and equip them to be self-sufficient, productive agents of hope and reconciliation in their families and communities. Personal transformation is fostered through development of: respect for others, social competence, leadership skills, academic achievement and economic empowerment.

History: The Nehemiah Corporation takes its name from an Old Testament leader. Nehemiah, the Jewish servant of a Persian king, returned to Jerusalem to guide his people in rebuilding the walls of the ruined city. As they rebuilt the walls of their community, their spiritual and cultural identity were restored as well. The Nehemiah Corporation was incorporated in 1992 after prayer between Christ Presbyterian Church with Pastor Craig Barnes and Union Tabernacle Church (now Fountain of Life Church) with Pastor Alex Gee. Friendships formed across the racial, cultural and denominational lines and discussions took place as to how the churches could pool their human and material resources to serve the community. During a year of planning, this diverse group developed a blueprint for what became Nehemiah's core programs: ACE (Academic Center for Excellence), YES (Youth Enrichment Services) and Family Management Services. Madison Community Foundation awarded a $20,000 grant that was matched by area churches. Other partners soon followed: Children Come First, United Way, City of Madison, Town of Madison and a federal grant from Juvenile Mentoring Program. In 1998, Dane County Department of Human Services expanded Nehemiah's scope and impact. Individuals and church partners continue to provide ongoing financial and spiritual support.

The ACE program is specifically funded and supported by area churches. It is an after-school and summer learning and enrichment program for children in grades K-5. The program's goal is to foster in children a sense of self-worth, confidence and positive racial and cultural identity, and high behavioral and academic standards in a Christian, culturally appropriate environment. The ACE program includes tutoring, Scripture, prayer and worship; creative arts; wholesome recreation; nutritious snacks and meals; enrichment field trips; summer gardening and cultural celebrations.
