The Schools of Hope Initiative offers a meaningful way to help children in need throughout the greater Madison area. Many young students struggle with reading and/or math skills, and are also in need of a positive role model, encourager, and friend. Volunteers who can spare as little as an hour a week to tutor/mentor a child for one school semester are needed at various grade levels, including preschool. Assignments are generally at local schools during school hours or immediately after school. Preferences relative to student age or geographical location within the region can often be accommodated. Periodic training for volunteers is also offered. If you feel called to share the light that shines in your life with a young person in need, this could be for you. Just contact our School Impact Team for more information about making an impact in the life of a child. There will be a Schools of Hope training session in Madison on September 18, 2007. Mother and Child Resource Ministry receives referrals from crisis pregnancy centers, social agencies, other ministries, and correctional institutions asking for baby clothes, formula, diapers, nursery furniture, etc. We deliver boxes of newborn clothes and blankets to hospitals or homes as requested. These boxes include 7 sleepers & onesies, receiving blankets, bottles, shoes, 7 pairs of socks, toys, bibs, 7 outfits, outerwear, diapers, towel and washcloths and 2 heavy blankets. These recycled items are carefully wrapped and presented as a gift, with a special Bible and an invitation to exchange the clothes for larger ones as needed, up to size 2. We have helped over 525 newborns to date. Often, there are other needs in these homes which we also attempt to meet. The needs are usually for basic items like beds, couches, dishes, bedding, clothes or food. A team of "Movers and Takers" picks up and delivers furniture to those in need. Finally, the ongoing tasks include sorting clothes and wrapping copy boxes. This is pleasant work which can be done on a flexible schedule; even an hour a week is helpful to the Mother and Child Team.
